Buying a good first harmonica

I am looking at buying my first decent harmonica, but had two questions. First, why is the diatonic recomended over the the chromatic? It seems that the chromatic is the more useful of the two.
Second, the Hohner Special 20 is a diatonic that appears to be real popular, but reading descriptions the Hohner Golden Melody looks to be superior. Why is the Special 20 recomened higher than the other despite this?
