No, if what you described is what you're hearing, it is overdubbed by the same player doing a harmony track. It's actually not difficult for a good player to make them sound identical. I've done unisons in the studio that were so close, I turned one off and just fattened up the first one with a bit of delay.

It could also be a studio effect called a harmonizer if the two tracks are actually identical in timing, but the results are always very "stiff" sounding.
